Code of Conduct — Campus Life
Why do we need this Code of Conduct?
UZH is a place where people treat each other with respect and openness. As part of society, we embrace our mission to contribute to a vibrant community and expect everyone at UZH to work together to achieve this goal by acting responsibly. This Code of Conduct guides all members of the university in their day-to-day activities. It strengthens the sense of community at UZH and ensures a shared understanding of how we interact with and care for one another in our studies, work tasks, teaching activities and research efforts, both online and on site.
In the pursuit of scholarship and public discourse, engaging with controversial topics also plays an important role. UZH considers creating a space for scientifically sound, balanced debate and fostering the skills needed to engage in such dialogue, notably independent, analytical, value-based and evidence-based thinking, as part of its mission and social responsibility. Academic freedom is a crucial part of this, as are personal responsibility, freedom of expression, acceptance of and openness to diverse viewpoints, as well as ensuring the safety of all members of the university community and their guests.*
Our principles:
We are a responsible community.
We want all members of the university and our guests to feel welcome and appreciated as part of a respectful, open discourse. Excellent research, teaching and university services are dependent on an organizational culture that embraces dialogue. At the same time, it is everyone’s responsibility to enable university operations to run smoothly and reliably. This is how we generate knowledge and promote skills that benefit the university and society – with each and every member of UZH playing their part.
commUNIty: With Each Other - For Each Other
We value and uphold integrity.
Critically engaging with a wide range of topics and considering different perspectives are crucial components of good scientific practice. UZH values the diversity of its members and guests and expects them to be tolerant and open when dealing with one another. In this spirit, we welcome all viewpoints that align with the principles of personal and academic integrity upheld at UZH.
commUNIty: Integrity
We demand and champion respect.
Our interactions at UZH are based on respectful conduct and mutual appreciation, regardless of people’s personal beliefs and opinions. Providing all members of the university community with appropriate opportunities for participation is an essential part of this. Discrimination of any kind, hate speech, bullying, sexual harassment, abuse of power, manipulation, violence and threats have no place at UZH. This applies to any and all forms of communication – whether spoken, written or on digital and social media.
commUNIty: With Each Other - For Each Other
We support and advise members of the UZH community.
UZH supports and advises its staff and students who experience unacceptable behavior or who are uncertain about the integrity of their actions. We protect anyone who reports such behavior – regardless of whether they are personally affected or acting as a third party.
Confirmed cases of unacceptable conduct may result in disciplinary action and/or measures under Swiss employment law. In addition, such conduct may also lead to civil and/or criminal prosecution.
